Vivero ArcGIS Reflection

  • Consider some of the reflection questions embedded in the training. For example, what do you notice about the data and how it could be mapped? What do you notice about your visualization as you change its drawing style and customize its appearance?

The base map styles had a large effect on the readability of the data. They often had varying amounts of information on them, which can change how the data appears when you’re visualizing them. The visual style of data can convey additional information and also change how accessible and readable the map is. Some visual styles had far too much information and were hard to read, some would be difficult to decipher if you were colorblind, and there are a ton of other factors that go into what stylistic choices and visualization options will work best.

  • How would you feel about helping someone else learn how to use ArcGIS Online? What did you find most interesting? What did you find most frustrating? What questions do you still have, and what parts of the tool do you want to explore more deeply?

I think ArcGIS Online is a really interesting tool that really shines when you have larger datasets that you’re working with and I feel like I’d be pretty comfortable helping someone else learn how to use ArcGIS Online it feels like the base-level features are pretty clear cut, although it gets more complicated as you get more complex. It also probably feels more familiar since I’ve used ArcGIS Storymaps before.  I read through some of the pages on the Analysis and Publisher tools but I’d like to get more familiar with the tools if I had the time.
